Page contents
Observation map
The map panel allows you to view observations that have been recorded with geographical coordinates.
Observations are displayed as markers on the map. Tapping a marker opens a popup showing details about the corresponding observation.
Map tools
The Map tools button in the bottom toolbar opens a panel with extra map tools. For example, you can load a tool for measuring distances.
Map layers and layout
The Map layers button in the bottom toolbar opens a panel that allows you to add polygon features to the map. These features are displayed in expandable folders and are mainly limits of protected areas.
When selecting a polygon, it is automatically added to the map layout. A second tap on a selected polygon removes it from the map and from the layout.
The Map layout button opens a panel that shows the selected polygons. You can tap on items to toggle their visibility.
GPS tracks
Litter.Mapper can record your trail during a survey. To enable this, tap the GPS button labeled Record Trail in the bottom toolbar of the Survey Info panel.
While trail recording is active, a red circle labeled with a capital R appears near the GPS status icon in the title bar. You can start and stop trail recording at any time. Each segment is stored in the same GPX file.
The GPX file is automatically associated with the current survey and is uploaded to the server together with your images and survey data.
To record GPS trails continuously during a survey, including when the phone screen is off or the app is minimized, Litter.Mapper needs the Allow all the time location permission.
If you select only While using the app, observations can still be georeferenced while the app is open, but GPS trail recording may stop when the app goes to the background or the screen is locked.
Litter.Mapper may also request Physical Activity / Motion permission. This helps Android optimize battery usage and improve GPS behaviour during active surveys by detecting whether the device is moving or stationary.
For GPS configuration options, see the Settings page.
