Generalities about recording

Litter.Mapper allows you to record litter observations. Depending on your approach, you can either document every individual litter item, or record a single observation for a litter type at a specific location and then specify the item count in the observation details.

You decide how close or far apart observations of the same litter type should be. If Use GPS for observations is set to YES and location services are enabled on your mobile device, each observation will automatically be geotagged and can be visualized on maps.

At any time after recording, you can update the details of an observation. Data collected during a survey can be uploaded to the server and reviewed in the Litter.Mapper web application.

Recording interface

The Counter panel includes a list of litter items that can be recorded. The composition of the list depends on the selection made in the Counting List Type field within the Survey Information section of the Info panel.

Litter.Mapper counter panel

The last item in the counting list is labeled undetermined. This can be used to record observations that cannot be identified immediately and may be classified later within the kladOS platform.

Undetermined item in the counter list

Each item in the counting list includes an icon, title or code, subtitle and a counter box showing the number of observations and the total number of individual litter pieces observed.

How to record a litter item

๐Ÿ–ผ

Zone A

Tap the icon to view a larger example image of the litter item.

โ„น๏ธ

Zone B

Tap the name of a litter type to display the list of recorded observations and more information.

๐Ÿ”ด

Zone C

Tap the red counter button to record an item.

How to record a litter item

After recording an item, the red counter box updates. Both the number of observations and the total count of individual litter pieces increase by one.

If Show item count dialog after an observation is recorded is set to YES, a dialog appears after each observation. This lets you adjust the Item count.

To change the count, enter the number in the Item count field and tap the green Update button. You can also hide the dialog without making changes or remove the current observation.

Item count dialog

If the item count dialog is set to NO, tapping the litter item will still increase both counters by one, but no dialog will be shown.

To change the item count later, tap the litter type name, open the Record list, select the observation and edit the value in the Record details panel.

Searching, filtering and sorting

๐Ÿ”Ž

Searching

Type a string in the search box. The list will update to show items that contain that string.

If a filter or search is active, a green reload icon appears at the top right of the screen. Tap it to clear search and filter criteria.

๐Ÿงฉ

Filtering

Items belong to category types such as Materials and Categories. Use the filter panel to select categories and narrow the list.

โ†•๏ธ

Sorting

Items can be sorted by database ID, last counted, alphabetical order or highest number of observations.

Search in the counter panel

To filter the list, tap the Filters button in the bottom toolbar or swipe the screen from right to left. Tap categories in the list to apply or remove filters.

The default category type is Materials. You can switch between category types using the buttons in the bottom toolbar of the filter panel.

Filter panel

When a filter is active, the filter button in the toolbar is highlighted. A label near the reset icon shows the active category. Tap the reset icon to clear the filter without reopening the filter panel.

Active filter indicator

To sort items, tap the Sort button in the toolbar and select a sort type from the sort panel that appears above the search box.

Record list

You can view the list of observations for an item by tapping its icon. Observations are ordered chronologically, with the most recent entry shown first.

Each row shows the observation ID from the Litter.Mapper database, the date and time of the observation and its geographical coordinates. If a photo is associated with the observation, it appears as a thumbnail.

To take a photo for an observation, tap the image placeholder. To view or edit the details of an observation, tap the text section of the row.

You can delete an observation by tapping the red minus icon next to it. To view sample images of the current counting item, swipe from right to left.
